A. We have used HEPA Filtration in our products for years. They are a very fine filter that offers up to 99.999 % efficiency of filtering out the specific pollutants. They work on the same theory as your home filters in your house - air passes through them and the particles are caught. Big trick is - if it bypasses the filter it leaves just as dirty. But more importantly, it sounds like you're wondering what they are used for - in home use would be in a smokers home, a person with allergies, someone who fries a lot - someone with pets, etc. Anywhere that you really want to get a better filtration of your air. Be careful when just installing them in your furnace/ac - the best ones can reduce the speed the air going through your unit. Make… [cont.]

A. My mother has emphysema with breathing difficulties so three of us kids pitched in and bought her a Oreck air filter and if there is a better one I don't know. The Oreck XL Professional is expensive but by far the easiest to maintain and one heck of a maintenance package. Here is a link to their website and by the way, they have a sale on now too.

can you tell me about Ozone Generators that are Sold as Air Cleaners? Are they good for asthma?
Q. I'm trying to buy an air purifier and there are many of them out there...why the ozone generateors have a bad reputation?
Asked by Beverly Hills Real Estate Agent - Mon Apr 2 00:50:56 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. According to the scientific research ozone can be quite harmful you can look at what the environmental protection agency has to say at this site: How is Ozone Harmful? The same chemical properties that allow high concentrations of ozone to react with organic material outside the body give it the ability to react with similar organic material that makes up the body, and potentially cause harmful health consequences. When inhaled, ozone can damage the lungs (see - "Ozone and Your Health" - www.epa.gov/airnow/brochu re.html). Relatively low amounts can cause chest pain, coughing, shortness of breath, and, throat irritation. Ozone may also worsen chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma and compromise the ability of the body to fight… [cont.]

A. I am sure this will tick off the ionic breeze owners but here you go any way; as one other person suggested, do a google on it and see what you find. Consider this, these contraptions, in principle, generate positive ions that are released into the air, right, okay, but how are they distributed around the house? My point is that they aren't. Yes, these ions can be attracted to and will attach to a number of things floating in the air but only upon contact and only if these particles find their way into the room with the machine and within a few feet of the machine. Those things can't produce enough ions to cover your whole house, much less an entire room, and if they did it would be dangerous and unhealthy. In order to cover the… [cont.]

A. Sorry guys, I just saw on the news Friday that air cleaners such as these if used over a period of a few months, drop your air quality inside your home. They said that your home's air quality would be the same as a smoggy day in California. So you may want to think twice about using them.

has anyone used those air powered drain cleaners?
Q. you know, those gadgets like they sell on HSN or QVC which look like a pistol, and force a quick blast of air into a clogged drain. just wondering if they really work on tough clogs before i pick one up. tnx
Asked by mark n - Thu Jan 18 22:53:13 2007 - - 4 Answers - 1 Comments

A. This type of drain "Cleaner" should not be used. A plunger or drain "Snake" are much more effective. If you think about it, blasting air down the drain is more likely to push the clog tighter into the drain rather than unclogging it. A plunger will push and pull the clog to free it and a snake will push through the clog and break it up.

A. I think you might mean WHY theres oil in your air cleaner (maybe?) since no factory bike (at lease any made in the last 20 years have oil soaked air cleaner boxes, and you didnt say air filter) if thats the case then most bikes send the oil breather back to the air cleaner for re burn...good for emissions bad for your air box..most bikes also have a drain for the oil its usually a CLEAR hose with a plug at the bottom of the air cleaner box or at the VERY bottom of the bike with other hoses for drainage...you should only get no more then half and ounce MAX if you get more either there is a problem with your engine, you over filled the engine with motor oil or you pulled the wrong one :)

Does air travelling via a simple fan through an electrostatic filter (like Filtrete) get ionized?
Q. Just to clarify a prior question, I had; I've heard that ionized air can be potentially harmful (i.e. free radicals) so I want to avoid air cleaners that ionize air. The 3M Filtrete electrostatic polyolefin-based filters (very common in furnace filters, and now as part of a standalone air purifier) are pre-charged with a static charge to attract dirt, dust, and particles of inflowing air. My question is, as non-ionized (regular) air travels through the filter (via a simple fan, there is no ionizer involved) is there any way that it could pick up any of the charge on the electrostatic filter, or that the air can become somewhat ionized in any way or form after it leaves the filter? Now, AFAIK, air doesn't conduct charges well, so my guess… [cont.]
Asked by Joe Jevers - Tue Sep 25 10:49:52 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No, this isn't possible. The static charge is basically "fixed". If it were possible, it would discharge pretty quickly in the bag, well before you purchased and installed it.

A. Actually you might want to investigate the harmful effects ionic air cleaners can create. From what I understand it emits dangerous ozone levels in your home. If its broke don't fix it. I would do some research before using it again. If anything simply use a better filter in your A/C. I hope that helps.

Asked by stepho409 - Mon Sep 25 15:36:19 2006 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The best filters are HEPA filters. They are used in microbiology labs to filter bacteria and viruses out of the air. Electrostatic filters do ok. The problem is that most put ozone (they rarely call it that, they refer to negative ions) into the air. Ozone is a free radical and a pollutant. Avoid anything that has an ozonator in it.

A. the more filters you have in the system the better the air quality,,,because it gets more of the dirt and dust out of the air. However you should keep your eye on them and dont let them get too clogged up where it would affect the air flow.

Asked by rita s - Sat Feb 21 14:43:52 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Some dust does go back out the vacuum's exhaust. the better filter that you have on the vacuum the less dust it will spew out. However you are vacuuming up far more dust than what is being put back into the air. If you have severe allergies or respiratory problem you can always wear a mask while vacuuming.

A. Surprisingly, most experts would NOT recommend air purifiers as 1st-line treatments for allergies or asthma. There is limited medical evidence supporting their routine use in these situations. These devices generally won't work unless your asthma triggers are eliminated from the room. Instead, work on eliminating your triggers from your home. Common ones include dust mites, pet dander (especially cats, birds), pollen, and more. Start by removing heavy rugs & drapes from your bedroom. Wash your bed linens regularly. Keep your home as dust-free as possible. Consider using a vaccum cleaner with a HEPA filter, to avoid blowing dusts into the air. If your symptoms continue and still want an air purifier, get one with a HEPA filter. Avoid… [cont.]
