A broad definition of a tool is an entity used to interface between two or more domains that facilitates more effective action of one domain upon the other. The most basic tools are simple machines. For example, a crowbar simply functions as a lever. The further out from the pivot point, the more force is transmitted along the lever. A hammer typically interfaces between the operator's hand and the nail the operator wishes to strike. Tools are the most important items that the ancient humans used to climb to the top of the food chain; by inventing tools, they were able to accomplish tasks that their bodies could not, such as using a spear or bow and arrow to kill prey, since their teeth were not sharp enough to pierce many animals' skins. A telephone is a communication tool that interfaces between two people engaged in conversation at one level. And between each user and the communication network at another. It is in the domain of media and communications technology that a counterintuitive aspect of our relationships with our tools first began to gain popular recognition. Marshall McLuhan famously said "We shape our tools. And then our tools shape us." McLuhan was referring to the fact that our social practices co-evolve with our use of new tools and the refinements we make to existing tools. Tools that have evolved for use in particular domains can be given different assignations. For example, tools designed for domestic use are often called utensils. Observation has confirmed that that multiple species can use tools, including monkeys, apes, several birds, sea otters, and others. Philosophers originally thought that only humans had the ability to make tools, until zoologists observed birds and monkeys making tools. Now humans' unique relationship to tools is considered to be that we are the only species that uses tools to make other tools. Most anthropologists believe that the use of tools was an important step in the evolution of mankind. Humans evolved an opposable thumb — useful in holding tools — and increased dramatically in intelligence, which aided in the use of tools. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License What tools do you need and what steps must you take in order to mistake-proof painting a room? Q. I am planning on painting my bedroom with my father. We do not want to call the professionals, as it is too expensive for a job that we are capable of. What tools should we acquire to mistake-proof the job? Are there any specific techniques, methods, or steps we should follow for a flawless finish? Any tips on getting the perfectly painted room? Thank you! Asked by c - Tue Jan 27 16:56:35 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. There is no way to mistake proof anything. However, there are techniques to follow that minimize mistakes. First, tape off the trim. There is a paper/tape combination you can use. It's about 5" wide, and one edge is adhesive. Tape along the top of the base where it meets the wall, and let it drape down over the baseboards. For door and window casing, use 1-1/2" or 2" wide blue painters tape. Use that also to tape around your light fixture. For tools, you will need a 2-1/2" sash brush (the angled bottom type), a roller with 2 sleeves-one for the ceiling, one for the walls. If the walls and ceiling are he same color, you only need one. A 4" roller and handle will also come in handy. You will need a tray, the bigger the better.… [cont.] Answered by woodtick314 - Tue Jan 27 17:31:53 2009 What tools could you make out of natural resources in the forest? Q. You could make a hammer with a branch, vines, and a rock. You could make a knife with a broken rock. Most importantly, you can make fire with two sticks (yes, you really can if you know what you're doing) and that's the most important tool of all.
