Disinfectants are substances that are applied to non-living objects to destroy microorganisms that are living on the objects. Disinfection does not necessarily kill all microorganisms, especially not resistant bacterial spores; it is less effective than sterilisation, which is an extreme physical and / or chemical process that kills all types of life. Disinfectants are different from other antimicrobial agents such as antibiotics, which destroy microorganisms within the body, and antiseptics, which destroy microorganisms on living tissue. Disinfectants are also different from biocides — the latter are intended to destroy all forms of life, not just microorganisms. Sanitisers are substances that simultaneously both clean and disinfect. Bacterial endospores are most resistant to disinfectants, but some viruses and bacteria also possess some tolerance. Lister noticed that certain hospitals had less mortality rates than others for the same cases. By examining these hospitals to see what they did differently than the other hospitals he was able to conclude that by doing certain things (like the surgeon washing his hands before operating) the patients had a higher chance of surviving their operations. Q. just thought about this can anyone give a very detailed explanation as to why spirit (alcohol) is a good disinfectant. and to how exactly disinfectants work on organisms i.e does it starve the organism of oxygen basically things like that. very well informed answer will get 10 POINTS... Asked by kevingarnerry - Thu Apr 8 00:05:43 2010 - - 2 Answers - 2 Comments A. simple explanation is alcohol dehydrates cells since living things need water to survive, they die. a complex explanation is because of osmosis. Osmosis is the movement of water molecules from a region of lower concentration to a region of higher concentration though a semi-permeable membrane (in this case the cell membrane of the germ and stuff). Since alcohol is more concentrated than the fluids in the cells, the water molecules in the cell migrate to the alcohol thus starving the cell of water and eventually killing it.
