Microbiology (from Greek μῑκρος, mīkros, "small"; βίος, bios, "life"; and -λογία, -logia) is the study of microorganisms, which are unicellular or cell-cluster microscopic organisms. This includes eukaryotes such as fungi and protists, and prokaryotes. Viruses and prions, though not strictly classed as living organisms, are also studied. In short; microbiology refers to the study of life and organisms that are too small to be seen with the naked eye. Microbiology typically includes the study of the immune system, or Immunology. Generally, immune systems interact with pathogenic microbes; these two disciplines often intersect which is why many colleges offer a paired degree such as "Microbiology and Immunology".

Microbiology is a broad term which includes virology, mycology, parasitology, bacteriology and other branches. A microbiologist is a specialist in microbiology and these other topics.

Microbiology is researched actively, and the field is advancing continually. It is estimated only about one percent of all of the microbe species on Earth have been studied. Although microbes were directly observed over three hundred years ago, the field of microbiology can be said to be in its infancy relative to older biological disciplines such as zoology and botany.

What are some jobs involving microbiology?
Q. I'm currently a student in high school and am wanting to go into a field of microbiology. Some areas that have interested me are environmental and cellular. I was wondering what kind of stable jobs are offered in these areas. I don't want to be a doctor or go into research, and I know that can be very limiting. Thanks in advance.

A. It's hard to pursue the field of microbiology without going into research. You will have to do research at some point, but the amount of research you will have to do will depend on what career choice you chose to pursue. You can work for the state government in public health, teach science at elementary-high school level, or even work for companies in biotechnology or the health industry. These are just some of my thoughts, and if you want a more conclusive idea, then you should do research yourself. Best regards.

What kind of careers can a microbiology major get into?
Q. I'm choosing my college major and I'm thinking about microbiology with a minor in genetics. I'm wondering how useful this major is and what kind of jobs (other than forensics) I might be able to get. Also, if you know, how easy or difficult is it for a microbiologist to find a job? How much money, on average, do they make? Any other suggestions? I'd love to hear them.

A. actually i used to be a microbio major ... but i switched to chem um, your job prospects and your future salary are pretty good. in fact, most scientists get good prospects and pay (since no one else wants to do our job, haha). the numerical salary varies by region of the USA, but i live in San Francisco, CA and I'd say around $35,000 to $40,000 starting. keep in mind that CA has higher salaries (and higher costs of living) than most of the USA, especially the midwest with a Bachelor's degree, your future job would basically be doing lab work. my friend analyzes the genetic code of Genetically-Engineered plants (used for making biofuels). another friend of mine tests ground-water samples for bacteria contamination (a little less… [cont.]

What is the biggest problem in microbiology to date?
Q. What scientist facing nowadays in microbiology?

A. One big problem in (clinical) microbiology is multi-drug resistance; pathogenic bacteria like staphylococcus aureus and mycobacterium tuberculosis are becoming insensitive to many antibiotics, making them increasingly hard to treat.
