What is the best disinfectant to use on bacteria?
Q. I'm doing a project on agar and how bacteria forms on it for a science fair, and its pretty much just finding places with bacteria, taking some bacteria with a q-tip and putting it on the agar to grow. But what i want to know is what is the best disinfectant or or product to clean the bacteria. Keep it simple please.

A. I assume that when you say "clean the bacteria" you mean how do you kill the bacteria, right? A couple of things work on almost all living cells: common household bleach kills pretty much everything alive, as does ammonia (Do not mix bleach and ammonia -- it creates a seriously toxic gas).

A. contact the manufacturer, and see if they will possibly donate some to you, or sell it to you at a vastly reduced price. Also ask the provider how often it needs to be used with the amount of animals you shelter. GOD be with you, and his beloved animals.

Can I incorporate disinfectant or bleach into agar jelly?
Q. I'm investigating the effects of different concentrations of disinfectants on bacterial growth. Can I make up the Agar jelly to contain the disinfectant or bleach? I can't see why not, but I thought i might affect the way the jelly sets.

A. antibiotics can be put into the agar with the nutrient with no prioblem however i have not heard of bleach. might be a good experiment to try small concentrations. normally a 10 percent bleach solution is used in the lab for sterile conditions and to destroy bacteria on plates. you might start with that concentration and move downwards seeing if 1. it affects the way the agar sets, and 2. at what percent will bacteria fianlly grow. good luck

A. Yes it does. I have a Scunci steamer and it only uses water. I often use the steamer with my usual household disinfectant(bleach) to clean germy areas like the cutting board. I love steam cleaning. I don't even mind cleaning the fridge cuz the steamer makes it so easy.

A. Although it can be used to disinfect some surfaces against some bacteria, it is not a disinfectant. It is an astringent, such as lemon juice and vinegar. Clorox appears to be the only one who wants to add this additional usage to its products advantages.

Is Tea Tree Oil effective as a disinfectant?
Q. I've read about the anti-bacterial properties of tea tree oil and that it can be used as a natural cleaner. If I put several drops of it in a spray bottle with water, can I use it to clean my bathrooms, etc.? Will it kill germs good enough? Do I need it to sit on the surface for a certain amount of time before wiping off? If not, what's another 100% natural cleaning agent that can be used as a disinfectant, not just an all-purpose cleaner but something I can clean the toilet with.

A. I don't think it would be strong enough. Here is a recipe for a natural disinfectant: The Four Thieves recipe Place a small handful each of dried lavender, rosemary, sage, rue and mint in a large jar, and cover completely with organic apple cider vinegar. Cover tightly and set for six weeks. Strain into a spray bottle. Whereas no home can be made to be sterile, spray the powerfully antiseptic Vinegar of Four Thieves recipe in areas of concern, such as on cutting boards and door knobs, always making sure to avoid your eyes.

I accidentally swallowed a small amount of disinfectant?
Q. In biology lab today, my partner was spraying the table to clean it with disinfectant and apparently misfired (I know it was on purpose) and some of it got in my mouth. I know a swallowed a small bit. Is this dangerous?
Asked by somerandomdude - Tue Oct 20 20:26:32 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Depends on the disinfectant. Wexcide would be bad. Alcohol is fine. Bleach other things are not as harmful if you dilute them enough (i.e. drink a lot). You could always consult Poison Control 24-hr free hotline 1-800-222-1222. Btw that kind of behavior in bio lab is dangerous in general; you should report it to the teacher when that kind of thing happens. What if it IS harmful? You shouldn't have to put up with that.

What's the Best Disinfectant Laundry Detergent?
Q. I know that standard bleach is great for disinfecting whites. But how do you disinfect colors? I recently discovered that products such as Tide with Bleach Alternative and Clorox2 do not disinfect. So for colors, how do you disinfect clothing? I also know that vinegar is just a myth in its disinfectant properties so please do not recommend that. I'm not looking for a home remedy.
Asked by DSmitty - Thu Feb 28 23:26:12 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I didn't know the answer so I researched. One site says that vinegar is a disinfectant because of its acidity, recommended one cup per washload. Hydrogen peroxide also disinfects but I couldn't tell how much to use, and it would probably be pretty expensive unless you buy in commercial quanties or strength. I wouldn't know, I'm not a chemist. However, if you go to the Cornell Co-operative Extension website and search 'disinfecting laundry', there is a short article on that subject which might answer your question, if you still think it's necessary to disinfect after reading that article. Doesn't look as if there is a detergent available which will do the job on its own. If it's really important to you, you might look at the new washing… [cont.]

Why do people buy air-fresheners and aerosol disinfectant sprays?
Q. There are constant ads on TV for these products. They are just cover-ups for some basic problem. If your house stinks so bad you need these, maybe it's a sign that your house needs to be CLEANED!

A. Some people like their house just to in general smell fresh, and nice, instead of having no particular smell. As far as the disenfectant spray- its good for after you clean a particular area, - like the trash can- in disinfects the trash can, as well as makes it smell nice. That is my personal take on it.
