Antiseptics (from Greek αντί - anti, '"against" + σηπτικός - septikos, "putrefactive") are antimicrobial substances that are applied to living tissue/skin to reduce the possibility of infection, sepsis, or putrefaction. Antiseptics are generally distinguished from antibiotics by the latter's ability to be transported through the lymphatic system to destroy bacteria within the body, and from disinfectants, which destroy microorganisms found on non-living objects. Some antiseptics are true germicides, capable of destroying microbes (bacteriocidal), whilst others are bacteriostatic and only prevent or inhibit their growth. Antibacterials are antiseptics that have the proven ability to act against bacteria. Microbicides which kill virus particles are called viricides or antivirals. From Wikipedia under the

Asked by ameldesm - Sun Sep 27 12:52:51 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. I don't know exactly what the difference would be between antiseptics and disinfectants (except maybe in their application), but it is important to note that antibiotics are substances which kill bacteria. When you use an "antibiotic" when you are sick it destroys bacteria. However these chemicals are very specific and generally have little to no effect on viruses, fungi, trichinosis parasites etc. Bacteria can even eventually develop resistance to them. Penicillin, once one of the most commonly used antibiotic was abused and now it is rendered nearly obsolete as bacteria have adapted to it. Q. Why is antiseptics important? Asked by coco - Mon Sep 8 14:31:51 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Why ARE antiseptics important? Because the human skin is generally filthy and performing surgery on someone exposes their internal organs to a whole host of microbes. As such, an antiseptic such as iodine is used before a procedure that breaches the skin in order to minimize any type of infection.
