Gram reactions to determine presence of capsules/spores?
Q. I have a stain test in Microbiology tomorrow, and we get more points if we use three or fewer slides. We will receive an unknown and have to determine whether it is Gram +/-, Acid Fast +/-, whether it has a capsule, whether it has endospores, and whether it is motile. As I understand it, it is possible to determine the presence of capsules and spores based on the Gram reactions. (For example, if my unknown is Gram -, it cannot be acid fast + and cannot have spores--at least as I understand it). However, I cannot find anywhere in my book that says whether capsule presence can be determined by the Gram reaction, and Google-fu turns up no useful information. Any help out there in Internet-land? Note: I am particularly concerned with the… [cont.]

A. gram positive bacteria are the ONLY ones who can create endospores. so you wont see them, but you know that if the slide is gram positive from the reaction, that it can form spores.
